Reading and Numeracy Exchange

Volunteer Support in Schools

We provide a comprehensive training and support package for all our volunteers who wish to support children or young people in schools. This includes Safeguarding training, an Enhanced DBS check, and an introductory training programme that covers:
Working with children in educational settings

  • Understanding common educational jargon
  • An introduction to phonics
  • Guidance and encouragement from experienced volunteers

We then continue to support our volunteers through regular Support Group meetings, offering ongoing training, peer support, and opportunities to socialise and connect with others.

We arrange supported placements in local schools and children’s centres—whether primary, secondary, or early years—so volunteers can help children one afternoon a week in a meaningful and structured way.

“I am very impressed by the informative and thorough introduction provided by the Generation Exchange staff.  As a volunteer I feel well-informed and supported”

How Children Benefit

All our volunteers follow an introductory training programme which introduces them to working with children, educational jargon, and phonics, plus the supportive input of more experienced volunteers and a mentor.  This is followed up through our regular Network and Support group meetings with further training and opportunities to socialise and meet with other volunteers

  • 1:1 time with a trusted adult – offering individual attention and encouragement
  • Support with reading and maths – helping build skills and confidence
  • Meaningful conversation – especially valuable when parents are not fluent in English
  • Intergenerational connection – both the child and older volunteer benefit from sharing stories, learning, and companionship
