VOLUNTEERING IN SCHOOLS

We offer a comprehensive package of training and support, including Safeguarding and an Enhanced DBS check for all our volunteers who want to help children or young people in schools.  We arrange supported placements whether that be in a children’s centre, primary or secondary school in order that our volunteers are able to help local children on a weekly basis one afternoon a week.

Children can benefit from this support by:

    • Having 1:1 time with an adult
    • Having help learning to read or with maths
    • Having the chance to converse with an older person when parents may not be fluent in English
    • Both the older person and the child benefit from talking together

All our volunteers follow an introductory training programme which introduces them to working with children, educational jargon, and phonics, plus the supportive input of more experienced volunteers and a mentor.  This is followed up through our regular Network and Support group meetings with further training and opportunities to socialise and meet with other volunteers

“I am very impressed by the informative and thorough introduction provided by the Generation Exchange staff.  As a volunteer I feel well-informed and supported”
